Rebel Frequencies Top Music of 2008

This one's worth a look. I'm going to print it out and take it over to Newbury Comics. Lately, I've been listening to Michael Franti and Spearhead. The new album, All Rebel Rockers, well, rocks!

Veno-Paraguayan Communist Conspiracy Revealed! In Dorky Music Form

As if you needed more proof that Latin America was backsliding into the "dark nights of tyranny" or whatever, this SHOCKING VIDEO has emerged showing Hugo Chavez and Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo singing about their plot to "change the world" at some shadowy leftist karaoke hoedown last weekend. "Enjoy."

Swinging the Blues

One of David's favorite Chris Smither songs. I found this drawing the other day. David's mother, Helen, just sent a slew of old photos. This photo of the drawing is fuzzy but it's too late at night to re-do so I'm posting it anyway. There's new music---"Going Home", the tribute to Fats Domino, and, wow, an album of Fats himself. Thirty tunes. Both are very satisfying. I'll review the Going Home album soon. Must hear: Willie Nelson doing "I hear you knockin'". Must.
After ordering all this new music, the piper will have to be paid. The piper's name is Capital One Credit Card. His tune is not very nice.

Gosh, It's a Brutal World

But tucked inside it. like those extra dimensions that are so small and tightly wrapped that we can't see them, are many wonderful things. They are wonderful only because we have grown into our own explanations of the the world. I recently bought the soundtrack from Genghis Blues. I can't remember if I posted anything about the movie on the blog. Paul Pena, and old blues artist who played with the greats, is now blind and living poorly in San Fransisco. One day he hears the Tuvan throat singers on the radio....and the rest is history. He teaches himself throat singing. He makes friends with a gang of wonderful oddballs. They all fly to Tuva and Paul ends up, with an amazing cast of characters, in Tuva, singing with the throat singers. He plays and sings with the Tuvans. Strong friendships happen and the music gets blended. The movie is powerful enough. But the soundtrack bent me backwards. Between Paul and the Tuvans, the blues happen. if you think you might have a soul, rent the movie and buy the soundtrak. If you are not sure, ask me and I'll help you get the music.

La Orquesta Juvenil Simon Bolivar de Venezuela

Rory Carroll in CaracasTuesday September 4, 2007
The Guardian
President Hugo Chávez has thrown his weight behind a scheme which brings classical music into Venezuela's slums, following international acclaim for the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra. The Venezuelan leader announced the creation of "Misión Música", a government-funded effort to give tuition and instruments to 1 million impoverished children.
He made the announcement on his Sunday television show, Aló Presidente, after reading out rapturous British reviews of the youth orchestra's performances last month at London's Royal Albert Hall (read more)

Absolutely must-see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6q7RCAcaBk

I got this from a terrific blog from the uk.

Are We Not Men?

Was it 1979? No one had ever seen or heard anything like it. Here's a scene from my distorted and unreliable memory. Taking Miguel to see Devo.
"God made man but a monkey provided the glue"
Didn't they open for Elvis Costello that night? Devo onstage in yellow rubber boots. This was before the flower pots on the head. Elvis in some kind of checkered jacket. And when was it that we went to see "Rock and Roll High School"? And the Ramones were on stage live that night. Wasn't there a concert with David Johanson, Willie Alexander, Pere Ubu and the Ramones? Those were the days for sure.

The Fat Man

New album due out next week celebrating Fats Domino. The great New Orleans Artist was feared dead in the wake of Katrina. But NO!!! The 79 year old Fats lives!
Now there's a tribute album and who isn't on it? No one. Check it out below.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/22/arts/music/22fats.html?ex=1191124800&en=4f6d1f15f67d1e41&ei=5070&emc=eta1
The album will raise money to restore Fats's home which was pretty much destroyed in the flood. This promises to rival the Jerry Lee Lewis album "Last Man Standing". There's a link to the Jerry Lee album on my website http://www.suckerbeagle.com/
